Student walkouts continue on Friday throughout L.A. County

Student walkouts have continued in several Los Angeles County communities, including East Los Angeles, Compton and South Gate. The walkouts are part of protests that have erupted this week throughout Southern California, other parts of the state and across the nation.

Southeast L.A. schools are planning to march from Maywood High School, Bell High School, South Gate High School, Jordan High School and STEAM Legacy High School to the Azalea Shopping Center in South Gate to protest.

In Pasadena, students from Pasadena High School marched on Lake Avenue.

In downtown Los Angeles, one person was stabbed and another was taken into custody.

High school students converged on Los Angeles City Hall, then marched through streets in the area and later gathered in Grand Park.

Around 1:30 p.m., one person — likely a student — wound up on the ground, bleeding from an apparent stab wound, according to video from the scene. Many of other students then ran from the park as police and paramedics arrived.

One person was seen being taken into custody. The injured person was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

Los Angeles police declared the remaining protesters to be involved in an unlawful assembly and ordered the group to disperse, which they did. While the participants walked in various directions away from the park, a group later assembled on the Sixth Street Bridge.

Spring Street was closed in front of City Hall and Grand Park while a police investigation was conducted.

The protest by students against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies marked the sixth straight day of such rallies in the downtown area. The marches had been mostly peaceful, although dozens of people were detained on Monday night.

The protests against the Trump administration deportations and immigration policies that started with Donald Trump’s second term with a dozen executive orders have increased since last weekend.

Thousands gathered in downtown L.A. on Sunday to protest, even temporarily blocking the 101 freeway near Placita Olvera.

On Tuesday, students from East Los Angeles schools walked out of their classes around 9 a.m., marching to Los Angeles City Hall.

Students from James A. Garfield Senior High School organized that walkout, as well as students from Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School, Bravo Medical Magnet School and Felicitas & Gonzalo Mendez High School.
